CNA Test

A career as a Certified Nurse Assistant or CNA is a rewarding and fulfilling career. In order to be licensed to work as a CNA you must first take a training course and then pass the CNA Test. You can pay for the Certified Nurse Assistant course at a college or school, find a free course through programs such as American Red Cross or find an employer willing to cover the costs or train at their facility. These courses typically last 8-12 weeks and can be found throughout the US at schools and online. Once you complete the course you can apply to take the CNA exam.

What is a CNA Test?

The CNA Test is something that you must pass in order to be licensed with the Nurse Aide Registry. The CNA test is designed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. It is created to evaluate the skills and knowledge of prospective CNA’s to be sure they are capable of handling the tasks and duties necessary.

The Certified Nurse Assistant exam consists of two parts. The first part is an English written test. If English is not your first language you can request to have the exam done orally. The test is multiple choice, and contains an average of seventy questions. The amount and type of question varies by state and exam hour and time.  Each state has its own percent of accuracy in order to pass. The questions range in all categories and can be anything from patient interaction to medical procedures. You should be prepared for all categories. Prepare your knowledge in things such as patient rights, communication, and ethical behavior, as well as hygiene, infection control, and nutrition.

The second part of the exam is a practical skills test. Five skills out of the twenty-five skills taught and practiced will be chosen and you will be asked to perform these for your examiner.  You will be tested on accuracy and this will determine if you pass this portion.

What if I fail?

If you fail either or both portionyou will be allowed to retake only the failed portion. You can retake it up to three times within two years of completing your course. If you fail again you must retake the course to take it again. The CNA Test is available online.
